Abstract:
The Bodo tribe, considered as the largest plains tribe in Assam, has been agitating for a separate state since the 1980s. Land alienation, marginalization faced from the mainstream and dominant community, and prolonged economic backwardness are believed to be the driving factors for the Bodo identity movement. While the movement itself began to gain momentum only in the 1960s, the Bodo people’s insistence on a distinctive identity vis-à-vis the mainstream Assamese community can be traced to pre-independent India. The Bodo people’s consciousness of distinctness may have been a result of the onset of colonization. At the same time, the fact that this consciousness may have been influenced by colonial writings about the community cannot be ignored. Since the colonial period, the Bodos have lived in fear of assimilation and extinction while also being acutely conscious of their “glorious past” now lost. Both the fear of assimilation and the awareness of a lost glory are colonial legacies. While the first is a result of the Hindu/Assamese cultural hegemony, the second is inspired by colonial writings about the Bodos or Bodo-Kacharis. This essay is an attempt to study the Bodo identity movement as a colonial legacy by looking at its accompanying cultural nationalism through literature without negating the violent turn it took in the 1990s. It would be an attempt to establish the hypothesis that the Bodo tribe’s very perception of the self is derived from the knowledge produced by colonial writings on the tribe.
Witnessing the Bodo Identity Movement: A Reading of Mangalsingh Hazowary’s Poetry
Jeetumoni Basumatarydialog: A bi-annual peer-reviewed journal , vol: 2022 , 39-57, 2022
Abstract:
Literatures from the Northeast of India has now become a separate genre within Indian writings in English. The rich and diverse traditional culture and their erosion in the face of rapid modernization, as well as the effect of the long-drawn political turmoil on the common people of the region are some of its main concerns. Although writers in English are more known than others due to their accessibility by a greater number of audiences, there are a great many writers from the region who write in other languages and whose poetry express similar urge to bear witness. But they are lesser known either due to unavailability of translations or bad translations. While Assamese writers like Hiren Bhattacharyya, Nabakanta Barua, Nilmani Phookan, Nirmal Prabha Bordoloi and Indira Goswami have been translated and stand as representative voices from the state, the same cannot be said about Bodo writers from Assam. Despite occupying much attention of the media as well as the academia with stories of conflict, ethnic cleansing, and a long-drawn separatist movement, the availability of Bodo literature to non-Bodo readers is conspicuous by its absence. This essay is an attempt at engaging with this absence by looking at Mangalsingh Hazowary as one more important voice among the many poets from the Northeast of India. Some of his poems in his anthology of poetry Jiuni Mwgthang Bisombi Arw Aroj (True Memoir of a Life and Some Prayers) shall be read as bearing witness to the Bodo identity movement, and thus fulfilling one of the tasks considered most crucial for writers from the region.
From Exile to Cultural Nationalism: Reading Fadhma Amrouche as a Kabyle Cultural Nationalist
Jeetumoni BasumataryThe Journal of North African Studies , vol: online , 2023 , https://doi.org/10.1080/1369801X.2021.2015700
Abstract:
The beginning of the Amazigh cultural movement is often traced to the Berber Spring of 1980 which was triggered by the cancellation of Mouloud Mammeri’s lecture on ancient Berber poetry at the University of Tizi Ouzou in Algeria. But the intellectual foundation of the movement can be traced to the discourse of an Amazigh cultural nationalism which developed since the 1930s in the articulation of anti-colonial sentiments. From Si Amar Saïd ou Boulifa to Mouloud Mammeri, several writers from Kabylia have been identified as having contributed to the construction of a Kabyle Berber identity in their articulation of colonial subjectivity. But in this list of cultural nationalists from Kabylia, Fadhma Amrouche’s name is conspicuously absent despite the rich legacy of Kabyle oral poetry and songs she left behind and her autoethnography My Life Story: The Autobiography of a Berber Woman ([1968] 1988). This essay seeks to situate Fadhma Amrouche in the above-mentioned list by arguing that her eternal sense of alienation and exile as a Berber Christian colonised subject, is also a story about her adherence to her Kabyle identity. This shall be done by examining the relationship between her exile, quest for identity, and cultural revival as expressed in her autobiography.
Poetry, Identity and the Geography of Culture: Representations of Landscape in Poetry in English from Northeast India
Rajashree Bargohain and Rohini Mokashi PunekarAsian Ethnicity , vol: 23 , 47-65, 2020 , 10.1080/14631369.2020.1727311
Abstract:
This paper hopes to argue that the representations of and engagements with landscape by poets writing in English in Northeast India are embedded within the larger cultural and political contexts of the region. Indigenous communities across the world attach profound cultural, political, economic and spiritual significance to the territories they traditionally inhabit. It is for this reason that the preservation of their natural environment becomes crucial to the preservation of their cultural identities. Representations of the landscape by poets of Northeast India reflect the significance attached to and the intimate relationship shared with the natural environment by its diverse indigenous communities. The poets also display their awareness of the threats of ecological degradation faced by the region and the anxiety these threats have produced amongst the local population. The paper will try to understand the political dynamics behind the nostalgic associations ascribed to landscape in the poetry written in English in Northeast India.

Abstract:
This chapter undertakes a tracing of cultural or literary mappings of Bhutan and western Arunachal Pradesh (AP) found in the works of two renowned local authors, Kunzang Choden and Yeshe Dorje Thongchi. The contiguous regions of Bhutan and western AP, now separated by an international border, not only share deep-rooted connections but are also ‘contact zones,’ to use Mary Louise Pratt’s famous term. This paper seeks to imagine Bhutan and western Arunachal Pradesh as a transnational geo-cultural unit by reading such modern literary works representative of the region during its transitional years to identify shared patterns of monastic religious influence, travel and modern state-formation therein that inform the historical trajectories followed by the people inhabiting this region in the second half of the twentieth century.
Blind’ Fate and the Disabled Genius: Postcoloniality and ‘Translation’ in Saurabh Kumar Chaliha’s “Beethoven”
Rajashree BargohainSomeshwar Sati and GJV Prasad eds. Disability in Translation: The Indian Experience. London: Routledge, 2019. , 119-132, 2019 , https://doi.org/10.4324/9780429319570
Abstract:
Saurabh Kumar Chaliha was the pen name of Surendra Nath Medhi (1930-2011), a renowned short story writer in the Asamiya language. His short story “Beethoven” (1974) is based upon the struggles of the eponymous musical genius against his hearing disabilities. Scholarly thinking on translation studies has mostly been found to overlook the engagements of postcolonial societies with the Western world manifested in works written in languages of non-Western origin. This paper proposes that all postcolonial texts, especially those written in indigenous languages, are complex repositories of multiple layers of translation and ‘transcreation’. Through an analysis of “Beethoven”, the paper also seeks to examine the power hierarchies inscribed in acts of translation from Indian languages into major world languages like English, which also happen to be the languages of former colonisers.
The paper situates Chaliha’s short story in the broader context of attitudes towards disability as reflected in its cultural representations, especially its literary representations, in Assam. It is facilitated by a comparative understanding of the representation of disability in Assamese folk literature and an investigation of the continuities and changes in these attitudes in the short story “Beethoven” as a modern, postcolonial Assamese text.
